Improvements that have been completed are:

  • A new toilet block has been constructed
  • A new car park has been constructed
  • Paving has been placed between the car park, barbeque and playground

Works have been funded from a $100,000 grant from the Premier’s Local Government Stimulus Program and matched with $100,000 of Council’s funds.

Further planned improvements are:

  • Globe and Fern Streets and Flinders Lane will be sealed and stormwater drainage and kerbing will be implemented.  Once completed Globe Street will be one way from Flinders Lane to MacDonnell Street, and two way between Flinders Lane and Freeling Street. This will ensure vehicles using the new Market Square car park exit safely and keeps construction costs down.  Once completed access from the carpark will be from McDonnell Street and exit via Globe Street.  Parking will be provided for coaches, caravans as well as plenty of car parking spaces for people using Market Square and the Visitor Information Centre
  • a shelter will be built over the western part of the playground to provide shade and keep the area dry during wet weather increasing the use of the playground
  • a new skatepark will be designed, with the intention to construct it in the northwest corner in 2016/17and installing a path network, and landscaping areas impacted by the works
  • a fenced recreation area for dogs

During September, October and November 2012 extensive community consultation was undertaken on Market Square.  The community was asked:

  • how do you currently utilise these areas
  • what do you like or dislike about the areas
  • how could the areas be improved in the future.

The information that was obtained from the community was used to prepare plans for Market Square which reflected community feedback, as well as direction provided by the Market Square subcommittee and council officers.

In October and November 2013 before being finalised and adopted for implementation the community was invited to let Council know what they thought of the concept plans.  The community was also invited to comment on the upgrade of toilet facilities at Market Square.

At the time the Market Square concept plans received some positive and negative comments relating to the proposed traffic management and car parking.  The dog exercise area received positive feedback while some concerns were raised regarding the planting of shrubs that could provide screening and raise safety issues.

The feedback received was considered by the Community Recreation and Sports Facilities Committee and in May 2014 Council endorsed a works program for Market Square.

Market Square is identified in the Open Space Strategy as one of Naracoorte’s premier recreation areas.  The works occurring at Market Square support the achievement of Council’s Strategic Plan themes of Harmony and Culture - a safe, healthy and diverse community celebrating our similarities and differences and Liveable neighbourhoods - a range of well-planned neighbourhoods and public space, designed with a strong sense of identity and place.
